+ YEAR ZERO +
LOCATION: D89 FROM LE PENON BEACH. SEIGNOSSE [FOLLOW THE PINK ARROWS], YOU WON’T MISS IT, ‘DOORS’ OPEN AT 19H30
The first buses on the highway to nowhere started arriving at 20H00, with patrons walking down the path with head in hands in disbelief, walking straight to the open Navajo styled bar to calm their nerves with a choice of Red and Rose wine straight from the barrel, Vodka or Gin and Rockstar or a full strength beer on tap. The chill out lounge which was like something you’d find in your grandmother’s home was secured early and not given up easily.
The bus ride had been an experience in itself bringing the masses from San Sebastian, Biarritz, Hossegor and Bordeaux. Each bus was blacked out to ensure the passengers were blind and forced to endure trippy desert visuals playing to an assortment of The Black Keys, The Black Angels, Eagles of Death Metal, The Dead Weather and Salem. When the final bus arrived the crowd were immersed in the sounds from Desillusion Magazine blasted out over speakers big enough for a stadium, captivated by the fire breathers and moon dancers a lucky few got to mingle with their idols Dane Reynolds, Taj Burrow, CJ and Damien Hobgood, Dion Agius, Jordy Smith and Craig Anderson while others having found the “help yourself” shoe rack were swapping out their kicks for a fresh pair of the yet-to-be-released FLAT CHARLIES.
21H30 the countdown to YEAR ZERO begun!!

…AND THEN THERE WAS BLACK!!!
A mere 5 minutes before the finale of the film, and the heavens opened, reminding us that we were in fact in the middle of the woods, with nothing but tires, roofing, wooden sheets, oil drums to shelter us from the elements. The generator went down, there was nothing but darkness all around until the fire dancers lit the place up and brought the pro surfers, party kids, hippies, geeks and haters together screaming “It’s the end of the world” and while some dived for whatever cover they could find, others embraced the madness and danced freely in the mud in their now soaked robes. The Apocalypse was upon us… and it was GOOD!!
The after party raged on until the early hours at the local Creme Cafe, until the buses took everyone home and left everyone asking “when are we doing this again?”
The night was well documented, so check the gallery below…
